Does SCANPAN cookware contain PTFE?Updated 4 months ago

The simple answer

  • Yes - our non-stick coatings do contain PTFE (Teflon)
  • No - our Ceramic coatings do not contain any PTFE (or other PFAS)

To explain in more detail

What is PTFE? - PTFE stands for polytetrafluoroethylene and is a chemical once used alongside PFOA to produce the material Teflon, which is the Dupont company's patented non-stick coating used in most cookware and bakeware. Because of concerns over the health effects of PFOA, manufacturers began making PFOA-free non-stick cookware since around 2013.

Does SCANPAN use PFOA? - While SCANPAN pans are made without PFOA or PFOS, they do contain some PTFE (as with all true non-stick cookware). PTFE is the base compound for all true non-stick cookware coatings, it is what provides the non-stick release. Departments of Public Health in Europe and the USA (including the FDA, ANSES, and EFSA) have determined that PTFE is environmentally inert, harmless to ingest, and does not chemically react with food, water or cleaning products.

Our non-stick is a proprietary product, used only by us, is called STRATANIUM. Like all SCANPAN products, STRATANIUM is required to meet some of the highest food safety standards in the world (being made in Denmark means we are subject to laws and certifications around green production and food safety that are extremely stringent), ensuring that it is safe and sustainable.

SCANPAN’s patented STRATANIUM construction provides long lasting nonstick performance. This surface is safe to use for food preparation and is FDA approved. PTFE compounds only begin to break down under excessive overheating, so when used correctly and under normal cooking conditions this ingredient is environmentally inert and safe for use. Even butter and cooking oils emit harmful fumes when excessively overheated, so it is important to use care when cooking no matter what kind of pans you are using.

Are PFAS used in Scanpan's nonstick products?

Yes, and here’s why. Scanpan's non-stick products contain PTFE which is included in the large group of PFAS substances. In cookware, these substances are completely bound in the hardened coating and will not transfer to food or the environment during use.

Our STRATANIUM nonstick is the most sustainable choice because it is more durable and longer lasting than non-PTFE based nonstick options. Our cookware is safe and backed with a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects.

Has Scanpan considered making a non-stick without PFAS?

Scanpan has always been best in class in nonstick innovation and will continue to explore the best technology available for our products. We are and will continue to be in compliance with government regulations around the world in all aspects of our production.
